Michael is the Founder and Executive Director of Step by Step. Since 1988, Michael has guided staff and volunteers to positively affect the lives of thousands of children across West Virginia. "Every day is a day we can take action to make someone's life better, whether that be creating a place of safety for challenged kids, to raise a ruckus with people to press for their rights, or to simply be open to opportunities for unexpected growth, learning and joy." Michael is also an accomplished journalist, oral historian, musician, and well-versed in children's literature.
Kathy has been with Step by Step since October of 1999. She is described by her coworkers as the "Mommy" of the organization. Her love and compassion for children and the Big Ugly Community Center is evident to anyone who meets her.
Andrea joined Step by Step in January of 2006 as Office Manager. As an office manager she is responsible for a variety of duties including: bookkeeping, human resources, payroll, and the day to day operations of the organization. Andrea has over 20 years experience as an office manager and bookkeeper. In 2011 Andrea added Food Coordinator to her job title. With West Virginia Department of Education funding, she coordinates to provide nutritious meals to at risk West Virginia Children. Feeding children has become her passion. She describes Step by Step as "a family working to help families."
Fast Fact: Her close friends and family members call her "Pinky" - a nickname given by her father when she was born.
Marta joined Step by Step in 2007 as an AmeriCorps*VISTA. Now Marta is the National Service Program Coordinator. After years employed in other types of jobs, Marta feels that she has finally found her niche in community service - working with AmeriCorps*VISTA members to acquire the skills and experiences that not only will assist them in their volunteer service, but will benefit them no matter where life takes them afterwards.
Tonya joined Step by Step in 2007 as an AmeriCorps*VISTA. During her term of service, she launched a successful statewide campaign to prevent bullying and promote child safety. Tonya continues this work in her current role as Family Engagement Program Coordinator. She also uses her background in education and child development to supervise afterschool and summer programs for at-risk children.
